There are many origins and many reasons rice is thrown at a wedding, and some are rather interesting. As many of you know.. rice has been seen as a symbol of fertility, abundance and prosperity, therefore showering a happy couple with rice ensured offspring and wealth. Here are some other explanations of this tradition. In some cultures the rice was to feed the evil spirits and to ward them away from the happy couple. These days rice is not thrown, partly because people were led to believe that it was harmful for birds(Totally Not…) and of course along with confetti, it is difficult to clean up outside wedding venues. More often now people shower the couple with bubbles or even a release of butterflies. Either way it still is a method of letting the happy couple know that they are ‘showered’ with best wishes, positive energy and love.
