A couple of years ago, I got to be a part of a “Surprise Wedding”, something that is becoming more popular with those who want something simple with their family and friends celebrating with out the need to worry about big venues, bridesmaids, tuxes, flowers, or gifts. Some couples invite their friends for a BBQ, an engagement party, a New Years Eve Party or Beat the Winter Blues Party, the excuses are endless. When guests arrive couples announce they are actually getting married and can guests get a beverage a be a part of the ceremony. Most ceremonies, at least the ones I do are about 15-20 min long, so most guests can stand. Maybe a few chairs are provided for those who need to sit. These surprise weddings can be held any time on the weekend, most officiants are happy to be there on a Sunday afternoon or weeknight. The number of guests are totally up to you.
I have also officiated at a ‘Surprise’ wedding that first included an intimate wedding with immediate family, followed a bit later by guests coming for a bbq only to be greeted with a big “Just Married” banner over the front door.
It’s up to you, but this way you have a wonderful celebration and most people are excited to have been a part.
